How to Switch from Monosnap to Maxisnap in 5 Minutes

You have decided to switch from Monosnap. Maybe it is the memory leaks. Maybe the crashes. Maybe the pricing changes. Whatever the reason, this guide will get you from Monosnap to Maxisnap in five minutes with your workflow fully intact.

No features lost. No muscle memory broken. Just a faster, lighter tool doing the same job.

Before You Start: Save What Matters

Export Your Monosnap Cloud Screenshots

If you have screenshots stored in Monosnap's cloud, download them before uninstalling. Once your account is disconnected, access to cloud-stored images depends on Monosnap's retention policy.

  1. Open Monosnap and navigate to your cloud storage / image library.
  2. Select all screenshots you want to keep.
  3. Download them to a local folder (e.g., C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\Monosnap-Archive).
  4. Verify the download — open the folder and confirm the files are there.

Document Your Hotkeys

Open Monosnap's settings and note your current hotkey configuration. The most important ones:

Action Monosnap Default Your Custom Setting
Area captureCtrl+Alt+5(write yours here)
Fullscreen captureCtrl+Alt+6
Video recordingCtrl+Alt+7
Previous capture areaCtrl+Alt+8

Take a screenshot of this settings page (using Monosnap — last duty) so you have a reference during setup.

Step 1: Install Maxisnap (1 Minute)

  1. Go to maxisnap.com/download.
  2. Click "Download Free." The installer is under 30 MB.
  3. Run the installer. No bundled software, no toolbar, no tricks. Just click through.
  4. Maxisnap launches and sits in your system tray (bottom-right taskbar area).

At this point, Maxisnap is functional with default hotkeys. You could start using it immediately, but let us match your Monosnap configuration first.

Step 2: Match Your Hotkeys (1 Minute)

  1. Right-click the Maxisnap system tray icon.
  2. Select "Settings" (or press the gear icon).
  3. Navigate to the "Hotkeys" section.
  4. Set each hotkey to match your Monosnap configuration:
    • Area capture: Click the field, press your key combination.
    • Fullscreen capture: Same process.
    • Video recording: Same process.
    • Window capture: If you used this in Monosnap, set it here too.
  5. Click "Save" or "Apply."

Your muscle memory now works identically. The same keystrokes trigger the same actions.

Step 3: Configure Preferences (1 Minute)

Still in Settings, match these Monosnap preferences:

Save Location

Set the default save folder to match where Monosnap saved files. If Monosnap saved to C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\Monosnap, point Maxisnap to the same directory (or a new Maxisnap subfolder).

After-Capture Behavior

Configure what happens after each capture. Options typically include:

  • Open editor — Opens the annotation editor. Set this if you annotated most screenshots in Monosnap.
  • Copy to clipboard — Copies the capture to clipboard. Set this if you usually pasted screenshots directly into Slack, email, or documents.
  • Upload automatically — Uploads to cloud and copies the shareable link. Set this if you used Monosnap's cloud sharing.

Auto-Start

If Monosnap started with Windows, enable the same in Maxisnap: Settings > General > "Start with Windows."

Step 4: Test Everything (1 Minute)

Run through your typical workflow to verify everything works:

  1. Area capture: Press your hotkey. Select an area. Verify the capture appears (either in the editor or clipboard, depending on your setting).
  2. Annotation: Open the editor. Add an arrow. Add text. Use the blur tool. Confirm all tools work.
  3. Cloud upload: Upload a test screenshot. Verify you get a shareable link. Open the link in your browser to confirm it works.
  4. Video recording: Start a recording. Record for 5 seconds. Stop. Verify the output file plays correctly.

If anything does not match your expectations, check Settings. Almost everything is configurable.

Step 5: Uninstall Monosnap (1 Minute)

Once you have confirmed Maxisnap works for your needs:

  1. Close Monosnap: Right-click the Monosnap system tray icon > Quit/Exit.
  2. Uninstall: Windows Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > find "Monosnap" > Uninstall.
  3. Clean up residual files (optional):
    • Delete %AppData%\Monosnap
    • Delete %LocalAppData%\Monosnap
These folders contain cached data and settings. Deleting them frees disk space and ensures a clean removal.

What Improves After Switching

Within the first day, you will notice:

  • Memory usage drops by 80-95%. Check Task Manager. Maxisnap will be around 35 MB versus Monosnap's 180-400+ MB. Your system has that RAM back for actual work.
  • No more restarts. You will not need to restart your screenshot tool to reclaim memory. Maxisnap runs stable for days.
  • No more crashes. GPU-accelerated app captures, multi-monitor setups, long sessions — they all work without unexpected exits.
  • Faster editor launch. The annotation editor opens instantly after capture. No loading spinner, no delay.
  • Better blur tool. Both pixelation and gaussian blur with intensity control, versus Monosnap's single option. See our blur guide for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Monosnap cloud links still work after uninstalling?

Existing links hosted on Monosnap's servers should remain accessible as long as Monosnap maintains them. However, you cannot upload new screenshots to Monosnap's cloud without the app installed. Download anything important before uninstalling.

Can I use the same hotkeys in both tools simultaneously?

No. Two applications cannot share the same global hotkey on Windows. If both are installed, set different hotkeys for each, or close one before using the other.

I'm on a team that uses Monosnap. Can I switch individually?

Yes. Maxisnap works independently of Monosnap's team infrastructure. You can switch individually and share screenshots via Maxisnap's cloud links. For full team migration, team plans are available.

What if I want to go back?

Reinstall Monosnap from their website. Maxisnap does not delete Monosnap's data or cloud storage. Your Monosnap account and cloud screenshots will still be accessible if you reinstall.

Is there anything Monosnap does that Maxisnap cannot?

macOS support. Maxisnap is Windows-only. If you need a Mac tool, see our alternatives guide for Mac options like CleanShot X.
