Settings overview
Open Settings by clicking the tray icon, or from the menu inside the editor. Changes save automatically as you make them, and every page has a Restore defaults button.
Preferences
Where files go, how they are named, and how captures behave.
- Save folder
- Where screenshots are saved. Defaults to Pictures\Maxisnap Images.
- Default format and JPEG quality
- PNG (lossless) or JPEG (smaller). PNG is the better choice for text and interfaces; JPEG quality runs from 50 to 100 and defaults to 92.
- Automatic recovery
- On by default. Keeps a crash-safe copy of unsaved annotations and finished recordings in a separate folder (Pictures\Maxisnap Auto Recovery by default) and cleans them up after 1, 7, 30, or 90 days, or never.
- File naming
- App and window title (default), Smart local (adds your annotation text or a few OCR words), or Private (timestamp only).
- Scrolling screenshots
- Manual or automatic mode, mouse-wheel or Page Down scrolling, slow, normal, or fast speed, and the maximum height (10,000 to 100,000 pixels).
- Escape stops scrolling and video capture
- On by default, so Escape ends a scrolling capture or a recording.
- Auto-copy upload URL and show upload toasts
- Copy the share link after every upload and show a small confirmation with the elapsed time.
- Auto-copy screenshot on capture
- Put the raw capture on the clipboard the moment the editor opens, before you annotate.
- Start editors with AI Mode and max width
- Open every editor with AI Mode on, and set the maximum width for AI Mode exports (default 1600 px).
- Updates
- Check for updates on startup and install them automatically. Updates are verified against a signature before they run.
- Include Maxisnap windows in captures
- Lets you screenshot the editor and Settings themselves. Turn off to hide all Maxisnap windows from new captures.
- Auto-detect windows during region capture
- Outlines the window under the cursor and captures it whole on a click without dragging.
Upload
Where captures and recordings go when you upload.
- Maxisnap Cloud
- The built-in destination. Sign in with a free account to use it; a free account includes up to 50 active cloud captures and 500 MB of storage (100 MB of it video, any length), with links live for 30 days. Pro raises that to 10 GB of storage with videos up to 1 GB.
- Add a custom server
- SFTP, FTP or FTPS, S3-compatible storage such as AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, or MinIO, and custom HTTP endpoints. Requires the one-time $29 Studio add-on. Each server has a Test connection button that performs a real test upload.
- Active server
- The destination that Upload and Ctrl+Alt+7 use. Switch between your servers and Maxisnap Cloud at any time.
- Self-hosted dashboard
- With Studio, the setup wizard on the Account page connects the app to your own dashboard so share links use your domain.
Hotkeys
Every global and editor shortcut, searchable.
- Capture
- Region (Ctrl+Alt+5), full screen (Ctrl+Alt+6), region and upload (Ctrl+Alt+7), scrolling capture (Ctrl+Alt+8), record region (Ctrl+Alt+3), record full screen (Ctrl+Alt+4), open from clipboard (Ctrl+Alt+1), open latest (Ctrl+Alt+0).
- Tools, File, Editing, Zoom, Window
- Every editor shortcut, grouped. Each row has a Reset button.
- Search
- Type an action name or a key to filter the list.
- Mouse buttons
- Click a field and press the Middle, Back, or Forward mouse button to bind it. Choose click-to-activate or one-gesture hold-and-drag for region captures.
- Conflicts
- If Windows reports that another app owns a combination, Maxisnap says so and suggests two alternatives. Changes save as you set them.
Privacy
What leaves your PC, and how to erase what Maxisnap keeps.
- Share usage stats
- Anonymous usage statistics are on by default and can be switched off here. They never include screenshot contents, filenames, clipboard text, or your email.
- Show my data
- Opens the folder where Maxisnap keeps its own settings and caches.
- Delete all data
- Signs you out and removes settings, account cache, upload history, diagnostics, and recovery copies. Your saved screenshots and recordings are never deleted.
Video
Recording quality, audio, and what happens when you stop.
- Recording profile
- Max, High, Balanced (default), Small, or Tiny, or up to 20 custom profiles with exact size, frame rate from 5 to 60, quality, encoder, and audio bitrate.
- Audio
- System audio and microphone are on by default, mixed into one track or kept as two separate tracks. Pick any microphone.
- Capture compatibility
- Automatic GPU capture with hardware encoding on NVIDIA, Intel, and AMD, or a legacy compatibility mode.
- After recording
- Show the result window (default), save automatically, or upload automatically. Auto-copy the finished video to the clipboard as a file.
- Countdown and badge
- Optional 3, 5, or 10 second countdown, and the on-screen recording badge, which is excluded from the video.
- AI-optimized export and GIF settings
- Size, frame rate, and audio for the AI-optimized MP4 (about 1280 px, 24 fps, mono by default), plus GIF frame rate and width.
- Video save folder
- Defaults to your Videos folder.
About
Version, updates, and support.
- Version and updates
- Shows the installed version (currently 2.5.2) and checks for updates on demand.
- Replay the product tour
- Re-opens the seven-page welcome tour.
- Report a bug and request a feature
- The in-app bug reporter with optional screenshot and redacted diagnostics, and a feature-request shortcut.
- Keyboard shortcuts
- A scrollable reference of every shortcut.
Account
Sign-in, plan, and Studio.
- Sign in
- With Google or with email and password. Sign-in is only needed for Maxisnap Cloud uploads and Studio.
- Plan and usage
- Your Cloud plan (Free, Pro, or Pro Plus), storage and capture usage, and links to your online library. Studio is a separate add-on shown in its own section.
- Maxisnap Studio
- Download the self-hosted dashboard bundle, see when a newer bundle is published, and run the setup wizard that connects the app to your dashboard.
Can't find a setting?
Custom upload servers and the dashboard wizard appear once Studio is unlocked on your account. If something else is missing, email support@maxisnap.com.
